Por vs Para. When using them? This is one of the most frequently asked questions of students learning Spanish. We will look at the main difference between these prepositions. PARA indicates "purpose" and responds to the question ¿Para qué? (What for) or ¿Para quién? (For whom). On the other hand, POR indicates "cause" (Because of..) and answers the question ¿Por qué?. That is the main rule, but you will find more uses in future lessons. Remember to take the test from below .
Por vs Para Uses
We use "por" to talk about reasons, motive, cause.
- Elegí Hi Espanol por el profesor. (Because of...)
We use "para" to talk about purpose aim, goals.
- Elegí Hi Espanol para aprender español. (In order to...)
We use "por" to talk about time and periodicity.
- La clase es por la mañana. (In the morning...)
- Tomo dos clase de Español por semana. (Per week...)
We use "para" to talk about deadlines or something is scheduled.
- Quiero ese informe para mañana. (First thing in the morning...)
- Recuerda que la cita es para el viernes. (On friday)
We use "por" to talk about approximate place
- Vivopor el centro de la ciudad. (I live downtown...)
- La biblioteca está por allí. (over there...)
We used "Para" to indicate destination of an object or person.
- Voy para tu casa. (going to your house)
- Ese sofá es para tu casa. (it's for your house.)
